The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje is confident that the Supreme Court will uphold the judgment of the Appeal Court that sacked his successor Abba Yusuf as governor of Kano State.

Yusuf, candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) was declared winner of the March 18, 2023, Kano governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, a judgement delivered by the appeal court declared APC candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, the winner of the Kano governorship election.

In a judgment delivered by the three-member panel led by Justice M.A Adumeh, the court held that the NNPP candidate was not qualified to contest the election, stating that he was not a registered member of the party as of when the election was conducted.

Speaking after the court verdict, Ganduje said “I thank Allah for this important judgment. We have to thank the judiciary for providing a good administration of justice despite all the distractions that have taken place since the beginning of the case.

“There is no doubt this is a victory for democracy. It is a victory for APC and a victory for Kano State.

“This is an indication that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria,” Ganduje said.

Adding that “But in all, probably they will go to the Supreme Court which is part of democracy. There is nothing wrong for them to go to the Supreme Court. We, too, are ready to meet them in the Supreme Court. And Inshallah, we will win in the Supreme Court as well.”

Chronicle NG reports that Yusuf and the NNPP have since appealed the ruling of the appellate court.
