Edwin van der Sar, a former Dutch international goalkeeper, is out of intensive care and expects to return home next week after suffering a life-threatening brain hemorrhage.

The 52-year-old, who played for Manchester United and Amsterdam’s Ajax, became unwell about two weeks ago while on vacation on a Croatian island.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit,” Van der Sar said on his Twitter account late on Tuesday.

“However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!” he added.

Following Ajax’s worst season in 14 years, which saw the storied Dutch club finish third in the Eredivisie, Van der Sar announced in May that he was resigning from his position as chief executive.
