Police in Yobe have detained Zainab Isa, a 22-year-old housewife, for reportedly stabbing her husband to death in Damaturu, the state capital.

Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesman for the state police command, confirmed the event in a statement released on Wednesday.

He said the suspect attacked her husband, Ibrahim Yahaya, 25, with a knife after an argument in Abbari ward.

“The command is saddened by the unfortunate actions of a couple that led to the death of a promising young man due to the consequences of an abusive marriage.

“On June 26, 2024, at about 10:00 a.m., the C Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from a neighbour about the couple. The argument, which began around 9:00 a.m., escalated into a physical altercation. Zainab Isa used a knife to stab her husband in the chest. He died from the injury before the police arrived.,” Abdulkarim stated.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect admitted that she did not mean to kill her husband.

She claimed to have acted in self-defence after a beating and kicking incident while she was still healing from a recent medical procedure after giving birth. The couple’s second child was born in early June.
