A passenger plane departing from Sydney, Australia, experienced engine failure on Friday, causing the aeroplane to circle before making a safe emergency landing, Qantas stated on X.
According to a statement from Sydney Airport, a grass fire broke out on one side of the runway at the same time. It is unknown if the two instances were related.
The fire has since been extinguished; however, some aircraft delays are expected.
Qantas did not provide the number of people on board the twin-engine Boeing 737-800, which was flying to Brisbane when the engine allegedly failed with a loud explosion. There were no injuries recorded.
“We understand this would have been a distressing experience for customers, and we will be contacting all customers this afternoon to provide support,” stated Qantas Chief Pilot, Captain Richard Tobiano. “We will also be conducting an investigation into the cause of the engine issue.”
