The Nigerian Army, on Monday, performed the ritual of lowering and hoisting of the command flag at Army Headquarters as Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede assumed command as the 24th Chief of Army Staff.
Chronicle NG recalls that Oluyede was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on 30 October in an acting capacity following the death of his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
On November 1, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, awarded him the insignia of office in an extraordinary ceremony in accordance with the Armed Forces Act.
The ceremonial lowering and hoisting of the command flag, which marks the start of his tenure, occurred after the Senate and House of Representatives confirmed his appointment.
Until his appointment, Oluyede was the 56th Commander of the Nigerian Army’s elite Infantry Corps, stationed in Jaji, Kaduna.
Oluyede and Lagbaja, both 56, were coursemates in the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 39th Regular Course.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, starting from 1987, and promoted to major general in September 2020.
