Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), converged on DisCos’ headquarters across the country on Monday, preventing workers from returning to work for the day.
The NLC and TUC members were seen singing and appealing for the Band A pricing to be reversed at the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company’s corporate offices in Lagos.
In Oyo, demonstrators invaded the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company’s office and picketed it.
Our correspondent reported that police were present to prevent any breakdown in law and order.
The NLC and TUC have given the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission a seven-day deadline to overturn the higher pricing.
However, the Federal Government warned that reversing the tariff would spell death for the power sector, urging Nigerians to suffer the temporary discomfort.
Against this backdrop, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has encouraged the Federal Government to eliminate electricity subsidies in other bands in order to sustain the economy.
