The National Assembly on Tuesday passed and rejected a plethora of Bills as it sought to make amendments to the 1999 Constitution.
One of the bills that failed to pass in both the Senate and the House of Representatives was the much touted Diaspora voting bill.
Voting on the bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide for diaspora voting; and for related matters, the Reps voted 58 ayes and nays 240 while the Senate voted 29 yes, 62 no and one abstain.
Meanwhile a bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, to provide for the Office of Mayor for the Federal Capital Territory Administration Abuja; and for Related Matters, 2022 was approved.
Similarly, a bill for an Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide for the appointment of a Minister from the FCT; and for related matters was also approved.
A landmark bill was also passed as the National Assembly made provision for Independent candidates. “A bill For an Act to alter the provisions of the constitution of the FRN, 1999 to provide for independent candidacy in Presidential, Governorship, National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly and Local Government Councils elections; and for related matters.”
