In a brief statement, they claim that “a number” of people were hurt in the al-Wadi al-Kabir neighbourhood.
Officers reacted to the event, and an investigation is still underway, according to a statement released Tuesday.
The police supplied no additional information, but other accounts indicate that at least one gunman opened fire with an assault rifle.
“All security measures have been put in place to deal with the situation, and procedures for collecting evidence are being completed as part of the investigation,” the police statement said.
Such violence is uncommon in Oman, a strategically located country at the mouth of the Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula whose population is primarily Muslim.
