The Gombe State Government has expressed solidarity with the government and people of Borno State following the recent flood disaster that wrecked havoc in the state capital and surrounding areas.
The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by a high-powered delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, presented a donation of N100 million to assist the victims of the flood.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, on Friday.
According to the statement, the governor communicated the people of Gombe State’s genuine sympathy at the Government House and the Shehu of Borno’s palace in Maiduguri, citing the two states’ strong link as motivation for the visit.
Professor Ibrahim Njodi, The Secretary to the Government of Gombe State, said, “The news of the devastating flood reached the governor, who is currently on an official engagement abroad, and he immediately directed that the visit be made, given the close relationship between the two neighbouring states.”
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed gratitude for the Gombe State Government’s concern and support, promising to use the donation wisely to reduce the flood’s consequences.
The Gombe team also paid a visit to Borno’s Shehu, Alhaji Garbai Al’amin Elkanami, to express their condolences for the loss of life and property.
They prayed for the souls of the deceased and expressed hope that such calamities would not happen again.
The Shehu of Borno praised the governor’s delegation, describing the calamity as more serious than the one that occurred 30 years ago.
Later, the Gombe delegation toured Maiduguri’s flood-affected areas.
