49 inmates pardoned in efforts to decongest Nigerian correctional centres

A rainstorm on Wednesday night wreaked havoc on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, causing major damage and allowing 118 prisoners to escape.

This was reported in a statement issued by Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Federal Capital Territory Command, on Thursday.

Duza stated that the downpour caused significant damage to the custodial facility’s infrastructure, including a hole in the perimeter fence that allowed convicts to flee.

In response, the NCoS quickly triggered its recapturing measures, working with other security agencies to apprehend ten of the escaped detainees.

Efforts to apprehend the remaining escaped prisoners are stated to be ongoing.
