Aisha Yesufu, a sociopolitical activist, has warned of a more damaging protest than the 2020 statewide 'End SARS' demonstration.

Nigerian politician and activist Aisha Yesufu has given her opinion on why women stay in abusive marriages.

According to Yesufu, one of the reasons women endure and stay in abusive marriages is because “being a female divorcee is hard in Nigeria.”

Yesufu made the remarks in a statement on her verified X page on Saturday.

According to her, “It’s easier to be a widow than a divorcee.” She added that, unlike divorcees, widows get “sympathy and understanding” from Nigerians.

However, she condemned the alleged rising incidence of attacks on widows, which she described as “scary.”

Her statement reads, “Someone asked me why women stay in abusive marriages, and I told the person one of the reasons was because being a female divorcee is hard in Nigeria.

“In fact, it is easier to be a widow than a divorcee. You have sympathy and understanding as a widow.

“Now I see a new culture of vilifying and attacking widows unfolding. It’s scary!”
