The news of Nigerian telecommunications company Globacom emerging as the 2023 Champions Newspapers Telecommunications Company of the Year has generated heated reactions from Nigerians.
According to a press statement, Globacom won the award at Champion Newspapers Limited’s annual awards ceremony in Lagos.
The press statement partly reads, “The honour reinforces Globacom’s position as Nigeria’s most innovative telecoms operator focused on providing affordable tools of communication that will transform lives and businesses.”
Dr. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, Managing Director of Champion Newspapers, described the purpose of the awards ceremony during her welcome remarks.
She said, “All we strive to do is recognise excellence and hard work to agitate our minds into doing more good.
“For Nigeria to get better and bigger, we will need more of this calibre of people and institutions who we set out to honour this evening because they constitute an integral part of the best.”
However, in various comments on X on Thursday, Nigerians berated the awarding of the award to the company, with some arguing, “they do not deserve it.”
In his reaction, Fabulous IBB mentioned that “they should have given the award to MTN.”
“I have to be on my MTN Mifi to be able to type this; Glo Network has been off/on since last Friday in my location,” he adds.
While Uche described “Glo as a scam,” Pat likened Globacom’s victory to the victory of President Bola Tinubu at the 2023 presidential polls.
“Just as Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election. Everything about this Tinubu government is a scam.
“We all know Glo isn’t even close to the second position of the best telecom company in Nigeria,” Pat stated.
“With such a flop network service? There’s no standard to win anything in this country; it’s about connection,” Chris argues in his response.
For Chekwube, she said in her response, “I don’t use my Glo again because it doesn’t have a network at all.”
Levi Chukwu also alleged that “Glo has the most useless, unstable network ever. You can go for weeks without using your data.”
Nonso Ojinnaka, who described the awarding of the award to Globacom as “funny,” mentioned that Globacom has the”worst network in Nigeria.”
