Yakubu Aiyegbeni nicknamed ‘The Yak’ is back in English football and training with Russell Slade’s Coventry City.

The former Premier League powerhouse struck fear into defenders during spells at the likes of Everton, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.

With Coventry propping up League One, Slade is hoping Yakubu can replicate his impressive goal-scoring record in England and fire the Sky Blues to safety.

He told the Coventry Observer: ‘As you know, he’s played in the UK and his scoring records are very good.

“He is 34 now, his last club was in Turkey. He hasn’t played for a while which is the only concern, but great pedigree. Goals wise, it is one in two.

“If that is the sort of thing he can do for us then we’ve got to be interested.”

The ‘Yak’ is well travelled so far in his career, having plied his trade for 13 different clubs.

His most successful spell was with Portsmouth between 2003 and 2005 when he scored 29 times in 65 appearances.

Yakubu’s record in the English top flight is not to be sniffed at with 96 goals between 2003 and 2012.

At 24th in the third tier, Coventry are a club in turmoil and the fans are at loggerheads with owners Sisu.

With the Sky Blues eight points from safety, Yakubu could prove to be an unlikely hero for Slade and the beleaguered supporters.

Yakubu’s performances in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League for Maccabi Haifa earned a loan move to English club Portsmouth which became permanent as they were promoted to the Premier League in 2003.

He has since appeared in over 250 Premier League matches for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers, and is the second highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni is the third highest scorer in the history of the Nigeria national football team, and represented them at four African Cup of Nations finals, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the football at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
