Troops of Operation Hadarin-Daji have rescued six female students of Federal University, Gusau, abducted in the early hours of Friday.

The Information Officer of the task force, Captain Ibrahim Yahaya, confirmed this development to newsmen on Friday.

The rescue effort was launched in response to the suspected kidnapping of an undefined number of female students from their rented hostels in Sabon-Gida, a few metres from the university campus on the borders of Zamfara State’s capital.

According to Yahaya, the Army troops, in conjunction with the Nigerian Air Force, tracked the abductors of the students into the forest and engaged them in a gun fight.

He further added that numerous bandits were neutralized during the rescue operation, which is still underway.

“The troops also recovered one AK-47, a magazine, four motorcycles, and one communication gadget from the terrorists,” he stated.

In June, students at the college staged a protest to raise attention to a wave of abductions targeting their classmates in the Sabon-Gida and Damba villages.

The two towns are located across the street from the university’s main campus, which is roughly 20 km from Gusau, the state capital.
