Omokri berates Obi over ‘unpatriotic’ remarks over Nigeria’s performance at 2024 Olympics

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, has criticised Peter Obi over his comments on the performance of team Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Chronicle NG reports that Obi berated the dismal performance of the Nigerian team at the Olympics following their medal drought.

Obi lamented that despite the huge resources employed in sending the Nigerian contingents to Paris, the team failed to win a single medal at the competition.

    • ‘What a country, what a shame,’ Obi condemns Nigeria’s medal-less 2024 Olympics performance

Describing obi’s claims as “unpatriotic,” Omokri mentioned that his analysis of the team is not holistic because he “singled out only two out of 88 athletes.”

Omokri alleged that Obi’s criticisms were laced with ethnic sentiments when he complained about the treatment of Favour Ofili and Annette Echikunwoke, who happened to be from Obi’s ethnic group.

The self-acclaimed table shaker added that the former governor of Anambra State is not fit to be the president of the country, alleging that Obi has the proclivities of being ethnocentric.

Omokri’s statement reads, “In your unpatriotic rants about Nigeria’s poor performance at the Paris Olympics, you singled out only two out of 88 athletes for mention.

“You complained bitterly about the alleged mistreatment of these two Olympians, namely Favour Ofili and Annette Echikunwoke, who switched allegiance to the United States.

“Coincidentally, they happened to be Igbo, like you.

“And then you insulted Nigeria over the case involving Ese Ukpeseraye, Nigeria’s first-ever Olympic cyclist, who had to borrow a bicycle from the German team.

“While neglecting to tell your gullible audience that since Miss Ukpeseraye did not qualify for the Olympics, Nigeria had no reason to invest $36,00 for the specialised bicycle she needed.

“She only got called while the Olympic Games were already being held because a country was disqualified at the last minute.

“You also had no words for Tobi Amusan, who could have won a medal for Nigeria had she had better support from our fellow citizens, whose attention was diverted by the Days of Rage protests that you and Omoyele Sowore promoted.

“Your only concern was for the two Igbo athletes you felt were not given enough support by Nigeria.

“Peter, is this not proof that you are too parochial to govern a multiethnic and religiously heterogeneous nation like Nigeria?

“This is the same way you condemned the deaths of protesters in Northern Nigeria and ignored, to this day, the killings of four police officers, seven traditional rulers, and five traders in the Southeast.

“Even after Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, through Simon Ekpa, claimed responsibility for some of the killings, you have still not condemned either IPOB or the massacre.

“Peter, Nigeria needs a leader who can love all Nigerians, not one who only loves people of his ethnic nationality.”
