French President Emmanuel Macron will host PSG’s victorious team on Sunday to congratulate them on beating Inter Milan 5-0 in the UEFA Champions League final.

In a separate statement on X, Macron proclaimed a “day of glory for PSG”. “Bravo, we are all proud,” he remarked. “Paris is the capital of Europe tonight.”

In comments to reporters following the capital’s team winning the top award in European club football for the first time, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo praised it as a “historic” victory.

Separately, Paris police said that scuffles broke out between fans outside the city’s Champs-Elysees Avenue and PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where they had gathered to watch the final on giant screens.

According to a statement from the force, officers detained 59 people; the majority of them were in possession of fireworks.

AFP journalists witnessed police using a water cannon to prevent a mob from reaching the Arc de Triomphe.
