Matija Sarkic, Millwall’s 26-year-old custodian, died tragically after falling ill while on international duty for Montenegro.

Sarkic became ill in a flat in Budva, Montenegro, on Saturday morning. Despite prompt medical assistance, he died approximately at 6:30 a.m. local time.

He last played a full match for Montenegro against Belgium just over a week ago.

Millwall posted a message of sadness on its website on Saturday morning.

It read, “Sarkic, the Lions’ number one goalkeeper, has made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.

“A Montenegro international, Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time.

“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected.”

The goalkeeper, who had a successful career with multiple English clubs, has received several tributes.
