Germany won bronze in the Olympic women’s football competition in Paris 2024, defeating world champions Spain.

The only goal came from a penalty kick awarded on the 65th minute, after Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll had clumsily fouled Giulia Gwinn.

With seven seconds remaining, Spain was awarded a penalty, and there was late drama as goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made a superb save to deny Alexia Putellas.

Minutes before halftime, Aitana Bonmati struck the woodwork, giving Spain the best chance of a quiet first half.

After winning the bronze in 2000, 2004, and 2008, Germany’s victory in Lyon marks their fourth bronze medal overall.

Nations League and World Cup winners First-time Olympic players Spain controlled the ball for much of the second half and had numerous scoring opportunities, but they were unable to connect to force extra time.

Brazil face the United States in the gold medal match at Parc des Princes on Saturday (16:00 BST).
