His 500th goal, also proved crucial as it gave Barca a 3-2 win at the Bernabeu to breath fresh life into La Liga’s title race. He swept the ball beyond Keylor Navas with virtually the last kick of the game after a fine run by Sergi Roberto.
Messi, 29, has scored 343 goals in La Liga, 94 in the Champions League, 43 in the Copa del Rey as well as 12 in the Spanish Super Cup, five in the FIFA Club World Cup and three in the European Super Cup.
The Argentina international holds a whole host of records, including being the only player to score more than 40 clubs goals for eight consecutive seasons, and the fastest player to reach 300 goals in Europe’s top five leagues (achieved in 334 games).
