An opposition leader in Ghana, Nana Akufo-Ado evaded the only presidential debate on Wednesday, allowing his main opponents, President John Mahma Dramani and four others to take the stage.

Akufo, who is the Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dismisses his only opportunity to speak to the Ghanaian audience, who are expected to cast their votes by December 7.

According to Akufo’s aide, the candidate decided to stick to his earlier campaign promises even though it meant missing the chance to present his message at one of the most high-profile events of the campaign.

Politicians have made it known that the next week election will be a tight race, making a landslide victory a difficult task.

Other major contenders are President John Mahama of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Jacob Osei Yeboah, who is an independent candidate.

Last month, Ghana suffered and macro-economic instability in the form of inflation that stood at 15.8 percent, leading to an elevated budget deficit and high unemployment. Ghana is a major exporter of gold, oil and cocoa.
