Everton beat Chelsea to steer clear relegation

Two goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin were all Everton needed to earn all three points against Chelsea on Sunday.

Abdoulaye Doucoure netted just before the hour mark before 20-year-old Lewis Dobbin sealed the victory for Everton, scoring his first goal for the team in the 92nd minute.

Despite their 10-point deduction, they Toffees are now four points above the relegation zone, while Chelsea, who lost their third away game in a row, sit 12th, with Mauricio Pochettino under increasing pressure.

In a dull first half, neither side looked likely scorers, with Everton lacking firepower and Chelsea lacking cohesion; Jordan Pickford’s save from Cole Palmer’s long-range curler was as close as either side came.

However, Everton found just enough quality after the break to elevate their industry and intensity, taking the lead after 54 minutes when Doucoure finished smartly after good work from Dwight McNeill.

In response, Chelsea produced little, with Pochettino rotating through his well-stocked bench to no avail. Cole Palmer aside, his attackers lacked coherence and inspiration.

It was no surprise when, in extra time, Dobbin marched onto a bad keeper punch, scoring his first goal for the Toffees.
