Bayern Munich has retired the legendary number five shirt in remembrance of Franz Beckenbauer.
According to a post on Fabrizio Romano’s X account on Sunday, Bayern Munich stated that no player would wear the number five jersey in the future.
The German international, often known as “Der Kaiser,” died on January 7, 2024.
The German international, widely recognised as one of the greatest players in history, is one of just nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d’Or.
He led Germany to victory in both the 1972 European Championships and the 1974 World Cup.
During his remarkable time with Bayern, he won three consecutive Bundesliga titles and a hat trick of European Cups.
Beckenbauer’s imposing presence on the pitch earned him the nickname “Der Kaiser,” or “The Emperor.”
In addition to his playing career, Beckenbauer had two successful coaching tenures at Bayern and won the Bundesliga in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996. He also served as the club’s president.
“Forever our Kaiser,” Bayern wrote in a tribute on X. “In memory of Franz Beckenbaueree, FC Bayern will never again assign the number 5 jersey.”
