According to the announcement, the 43-year-old defendant was brought before Justice Mu’awiya Dahiru on April 15, 2025, and found guilty.
“A Sokoto State High Court presided over by Hon. Justice Mu’awiya Dahiru has convicted Gerald Eugene (43, male) for receiving two victims of trafficking for exploitation.
“The offence is punishable under Section 13(2)(c) of the Trafficking In Persons Act, 2015,” the terse statement read.
A similar sentence was given on February 5, 2019, when a Federal High Court in Osun State sentenced a 29-year-old woman, Sekinat Owolabi, to four years’ imprisonment for human trafficking.
Owolabi was charged, tried, and convicted on four counts of human trafficking, organising international trips, and promoting prostitution.
In her ruling, Justice Maureen Onyetenu stated that the convict did not merit pity and should spend her sentence term in Federal Prison, Ilesa, without the option of a fine.
Onyetenu also concluded that the convict’s conviction and imprisonment will serve as a deterrent to other potential offenders in society.
