    Police nab 13 kidnap suspects, recover explosives

    The Anambra State Police Command said it recovered 20 improvised explosive devices, firearms, and other exhibits during multiple raids across the state. 

    Nnaghe Itam, Anambra’s Commissioner of Police, stated this to the media in Awka during a press briefing on Friday, adding that the operations were carried out by police operatives and other sister agencies.

    During the conference, the CP also paraded 13 people who he said had been apprehended around the state for a variety of offences, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related crimes.

    Itam identified the suspects as Emeka Okolo (29), from lhiala, Anambra State; Uchenna John (21), from Ebonyi State; and Victor Iniukpong (31), from Akwa Ibom State, who were apprehended while attempting to disconnect the tracker of a car belonging to a victim whom they kidnapped on July 15 at Nimo community in Njikoka LGA of Anambra, where they also shot one person dead.

    Itam stated that the suspects’ arms and ammunition had been collected and that police officers and other sister security services had discovered approximately 20 improvised explosive devices in various sections of the state, where the gunmen had strategically placed them for explosion.

    He added, “The recovered bombs include: attacking Mile IED (recovered from ESN Camp at Ugbenu, close to Isuaniocha in Awka North LGA); attacking Mile IED (recovered from Aguluezechukwu ESN Camp); six light-and-spark IEDs (recovered from Ogbunka ESN Camp); nine light-and-spark IEDs (recovered from ESN Camp); and two light-and-spark IEDs (recovered from a vehicle abandoned by ESN along the Ogbunka axis).”oi
