Thomas Partey, former Arsenal and Ghanaian international midfielder, has officially signed with Spanish club, Villarreal, even as he faces multiple rape charges in England.

The 32-year-old was granted conditional bail on August 5, 2025, after appearing before Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on five counts of rape involving two women, and one count of sexual assault against a third woman.

The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022 while Partey was playing for Arsenal.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the charges were filed on July 4, just four days after Partey’s contract with Arsenal expired at the end of June.

Despite the legal battle, Villarreal confirmed his signing, emphasising their respect for due process.

In a statement, the club said, “The player strongly proclaims his innocence and denies all the accusations made against him.”

“The club… awaits the judiciary’s decision, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts alleged against him.”

Partey is scheduled to appear at London’s Old Bailey court on September 2.

The midfielder, who transferred to Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 for £45 million ($60 million), played 167 matches for the Gunners and scored nine goals, including four last season alone from 52 appearances. On the international stage, he has earned 51 caps for Ghana.

Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season, secured a place in the UEFA Champions League for the upcoming campaign.
