Popular social media figure, Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Chronicle NG had earlier reported that VDM was arrested in Abuja last Friday and had remained in custody since then, sparking nationwide outrage.
A large section of Nigerian youths took to social media and the streets, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
According to the EFCC, VeryDarkMan’s arrest was prompted by multiple petitions filed against him. The agency also claimed that several invitations were sent to him, which he allegedly failed to honour.
Providing an update on Wednesday evening via his official Facebook page, activist and politician Omoyele Sowore announced VeryDarkMan‘s release with a brief message: “VDM Released”!
This development comes amid growing concerns over freedom of speech and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
