Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, has stated that the ministry under his supervision is planning to establish new passport processing and collection centres, particularly for Nigerians in the Diaspora, in order to reduce crowding at already established centres and to expedite service operations in the country and in the Diaspora.

According to a statement signed by Gabriel Odu, Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, NIDCOM, Tunji-Ojo made the announcement at the recently concluded sixth edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit in Abuja, which was co-hosted by the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the Nigeria Diaspora Summit Initiative (NDSI).

Speaking at the summit themed “New Vistas, New Aspirations, New Opportunities: The Diaspora and National Development”, Tunji-Ojo pledged that “Nigerians, especially Diaspora Nigerians, are to enjoy a seamless passport process and issuance system.”

The Minister also stated that a fully biometric immigration application process, similar to what is available in most other countries, is being developed to decrease human touch and facilitate passport collection by February 2024.

According to him, “Nigerians at home and in the diaspora deserve the best. They don’t have to suffer or sweat to get the Nigerian passport.”

The Interior Minister also stated that a ministry team will begin oversight of the E8 mandate in the United Kingdom as the first place on the assignment.

He asked the people, however, to report any unethical behaviour by staff in the Ministry and its parastatals as a deterrent to curbing the issue of corruption in the system and increasing the effectiveness of service delivery to Nigerians.

Tunji-Ojo, whose goodwill message was met with loud applause, assured Nigerians that positive changes would begin before February 2024.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, NIDCOM, commended the Minister for his positive disposition towards the plight of Nigerians in the Diaspora, particularly with passport issuance.

According to her, “the key thing is that we have to encourage our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora to come home and invest by creating a conducive environment with these packages.”

The United States has carried out successful airstrikes in Iran, destroying nuclear sites in the Arab nation. This was announced in a statement on X by US President Donald Trump on Sunday. According to the statement, the successful airstrike led to the destruction of three nuclear sites in Iran. Trump disclosed that “a full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary sites” in Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan, turning the nuclear sites into ruins. This intervention by the US comes after protracted airstrikes between Israel and Iran, which have led to the death of over 200 people and the destruction of properties. In a bid to stop Iran from the completion of its nuclear weapons, Israel launched missile strikes into Iran last Friday, killing some army chiefs and nuclear scientists. In retaliation, the Arab nation attacked Tel Aviv with nuclear weapons, targeting residential areas and even a hospital in Beersheba, Southern Israel. In a bid to quell the hostilities between both nations, Trump demanded the “unconditional surrender” of Iran, a call which infuriated the Supreme Leader of Iran, who vowed never to surrender. According to Trump, all US fighter jets which carried out the bombings in Iran have successfully returned to American soil with no casualties recorded. “We have completed our very successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz and Estahan,” Trump said. “All planes are now outside of Iran airspace,” he added. “A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. “All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our very great warriors. There is not another military in the world that could have done this; now is the time for peace. “Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the US president added. At the time of filing this report, Iran had yet to confirm the attack; however, its Supreme Leader, who has gone into hiding in underground bunkers for fear of assassination, had threatened to attack America in the event it carries out an attack in Iran.
