Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich) responded Wednesday after President Trump used his Michigan rally to mock her and her late husband, former Rep. John Dingell, whom he suggested may be in hell, saying his words were “hurtful.”

Writing on her official Twitter page, Rep. Dingell wrote, “Mr. President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

Rep. Dingell’s husband, John David Dingell Jr. was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1955 until 2015.

A member of the Democratic Party, he holds the record for longest-ever serving member of Congress in American history, representing Michigan for more than 59 years.

He died in February, 2019 at the age of 92.
