The Sokoto State Election Petition Tribunal has affirmed Aminu Tambuwal’s (PDP) election as the validly elected Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District.
The All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Abdullahi Danbaba filed a petition disputing Tambuwal’s victory, requesting that the Tribunal declare the election inconclusive for failing to comply substantially with the terms of the Electoral Act.
Danbaba further requested that the Tribunal order re-elections in 28 voting units where he claimed elections were not held during the February and April substantive and supplemental polls.
In a unanimous decision, the Tribunal dismissed the petition for lack of merit and for providing untrustworthy papers and evidence.
The Tribunal also awarded the first and second respondents, the PDP and Tambuwal, N200,000 in costs each.
Tambuwal, a two-term ex-governor of Sokoto State, won the election with 100,860 votes.
He trounced his nearest challenger Danbaba, who received 95,884 votes, by a margin of 4,976 votes.
