President Bola Tinubu has visited victims recovering from last Friday’s attack by armed herders on Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The patients are recuperating at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
Tinubu arrived at the Nigeria Air Force Base Airport in Makurdi at about 12:58 pm on a condolence visit to Benue State.
Tinubu was received by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and the host Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
They were joined by the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, other federal lawmakers from Benue State, and the governors of states in the North Central zone, ministers and government appointees.
Chronicle NG reported that terrorists stormed Yelewata village in Guma LGA of Benue State late Friday, June 13, unleashing one of the deadliest massacres the state has seen in years.
According to Amnesty International and local officials, at least 100 people were killed, others are missing, and hundreds are suffering from gunshot and burn wounds when assailants set fire to their homes early Saturday morning.
Local police confirmed the raid but did not provide a final casualty figure, while emergency workers said many of the fatalities were internally displaced persons who had sought safety in the area following previous attacks.
The Benue State administration has initiated a manhunt, but villagers fear further reprisals as the rainy season begins, which is the peak period for grazing and planting.
