President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that the intensity of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final match caused even the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, abandoned her cooking to watch the Super Falcons fight to win.
Tinubu shared a light-hearted moment from their WAFCON final viewing experience on Monday during a reception held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to honour the triumphant Super Falcons, highlighting how deeply the nation including the First Family was invested in the team’s success.
“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want to have high blood pressure,” the president said to laughter. “But they turned on the television. When it was 2-0, I got offended and restless.”
Then came the moment that elicited laughter and applause throughout the audience.
“You almost infuriated me because your mother, the First Lady, was in the kitchen, almost abandoning my supper.
“She doesn’t watch football, except when the girls play, and at the final whistle, it was joy all over the country,” Tinubu joked.
The president praised the players and technical crew for bringing the country together via their performance, describing their WAFCON victory as “a victory of hope, courage, and national pride.”
“You gave us joy, not heartbreak. You inspired millions, especially young girls, who now know that their dreams are valid,” he told the team.
