President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Dr. Doyin Okupe, a veteran politician, strategist, and medical doctor who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a statement issued on Friday by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to Okupe’s family, friends, and associates, describing his passing as a great loss to the nation.
“President Bola Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Prince Doyin Okupe, a medical doctor, politician, communicator, and strategist who played a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape,” the statement read.
Okupe, who hails from Iperu-Remo in Ogun State, held several key political positions throughout his career, including serving as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Special Assistant on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He was also the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and played active roles in the United Nigeria Congress Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Accord Party, where he served as the national leader.
In recent times, he was the Director-General of the Labour Party presidential campaign for the 2023 election.
Tinubu described Okupe as a “bold and articulate advocate for national development” and expressed sadness that his vast experience and insight were lost at a time when the nation could still benefit from them.
