Governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose claims thugs with presidential backing invaded the senate

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti has suggested that the thugs that invaded the senate on Wednesday had presidential backing to do so.

Fayose who is one of the leaders of the main opposition party, PDP, claimed that the thugs should be treated like coup plotters.

“Shamefully embarrassing that for the first time since 1999, the National Assembly was invaded by thugs and the Senate Symbol of Authority taken away,” he said in a tweet.

“Only thugs with Presidential backing could have carried out that treasonable act & those involved must be treated like coupists.”

The police is yet to substantiate Fayose’s claims as investigations into the invasion and subsequent snatching of the mace is ongoing.

The police arrested but released Senator Ovie Omo-Agege whom the senate spokesperson, Senator Abdullahi Sabi had accused of leading the hoodlums to cart away the mace.

Upon his release, his lawyer, Mr Lucky Ajokperniovo said that his client (Omo-Agege) only went to the Red Chamber on Wednesday to resume work and sit for plenary.

He added that he was only invited by the police to speak about his perspective on the incident.

“We are aware of media reports suggesting that Senator Omo-Agege personally removed or encouraged anyone to remove the Mace of the Senate.

“This weighty allegation is not true at all.

“Following the said media reports on the Mace issue, the Police authorities decided to hear from Senator Omo-Agege.
