Soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks, headed by an unidentified colleague, stabbed a police officer, Saka Ganiyu, to death after he was pulled over for driving against traffic near Volks Bus Stop on the Ojo Iyana Iba Road in Lagos State. l

Chronicle NG gathered that the soldier, who was not wearing his uniform and was driving an unlicensed T4 Volkswagen commercial bus against traffic, was detained by police officers on patrol at Volks Bus Stop.

Angered by the policemen’s actions, the soldier contacted some of his colleagues, who reportedly stormed out of the Ojo Cantonment Barracks and attacked the cops.

According to a paper detailing the events preceding the soldiers’ attack on the officers, Ganiyu was injured to varied degrees and was brought to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for immediate treatment.

“Meanwhile, the Commander 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment, has been contacted, and the erring soldier was taken into custody at their base,” the document read.

Our correspondent learnt that the soldier’s identity had yet to be published by military authorities, as a comprehensive investigation by homicide investigators had been launched to secure justice for the police officer.

The state police public relations officer, Benjamin Hundenyin, did not return calls and has not responded to a text message sent to his mobile phone at the time of filing this story.

When contacted for comment, Olabisi Ayeni, spokeswoman for the 81 Division Nigerian Army, replied, “Let me conduct my investigations and get back to you.”
