A Rwandan soldier opened fire in a pub on Wednesday, killing five civilians in the country’s southern town, the army said.

It was unclear what caused the early morning gunfire. However, the Rwandan Defence Forces identified the shooter as a 39-year-old sergeant.

“RDF has arrested the suspect and will take necessary legal action against him,” the East African country’s military said in a statement.

Six Rwandan troops were detained in 2020 after reportedly raping and assaulting citizens in Kigali’s Kangondo slum during the Covid pandemic lockdown.
