Senate President Godswill Akpabio has received a vote of confidence from his colleagues in the Red Chamber.
The vote of confidence in Akpabio was unanimously passed during Thursday’s session, following a resolution brought by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi.
The decision comes 48 hours after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), the suspended Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, addressed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York, claiming she was suspended for making sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio.
Chronicle NG reports that Natasha filed contempt charges against Akpabio and others over her six-month suspension without pay from the Red Chamber.
The Red Chamber called on Nigerians not to be distracted by the allegations, emphasising that the matter is already before the court.
Citing Order 40 of its standing rules, the Red Chamber stated that it could not interfere in an issue under judicial consideration.
