Senator Shehu Sani has called for the enactment of a law prohibiting lawmakers from tampering with budgets presented by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
In a statement published on his X page on Tuesday, Sani mentioned that such a law is the only way by which budget padding can be eradicated from Nigeria.
The former Kaduna Central lawmaker lamented that the adverse effect of budget padding is militating against the growth of the country.
”The only way to stop budget padding is to make a law that prohibits lawmakers from tampering with budgets presented by ministries, departments, and agencies,” he said.
However, he mentioned that such a law may not see the light of day, saying, ”But I don’t know who will make that law or how it can even pass the first reading.”
In March, Senator Abdul Ningi accused the National Assembly of padding the budget.
Ningi, speaking under the aegis of the Northern Senators’ Forum in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, stated that the Bola Tinubu-led administration was implementing a different budget from the N25 trillion budget passed by the National Assembly.
