A Russian strike on the centre of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson killed seven people on Tuesday, according to the regional prosecutor’s office.
The region’s governor released a video showing debris and shattered glass strewn around a market, as well as many dead on the street.
“Around 9 am (0600 GMT) on October 1, Russian forces struck the centre of Kherson, allegedly with cannon artillery,” the prosecutor’s office of the Kherson region said on Telegram.
“The shelling took place near a local market and a public transport stop. So far, it is known that seven civilians; three women and four men were killed,” it said.
The city of Kherson is located on the western bank of the Dnipro River, which serves as a de facto front line between Kremlin and Ukrainian soldiers.
Russian soldiers retreated from Kherson in November 2022, retiring to the other side of the Dnipro, but they continued to shell the city.
