No fewer than seven people died when a plane crashed Sunday in a heavily forested area of Jalisco in western Mexico, local authorities reported.
The plane, a Cessna 207, was flying from La Parota in the neighbouring state of Michoacan.
Jalisco Civil Protection stated via its social media that the crash site was in an area that was difficult to access.
Initial authorities on the scene “reported a preliminary count of seven people dead,” who haven’t been identified yet, according to the agency.
“A fire was extinguished, and risk mitigation was carried out to prevent possible additional damage,” it added.
Authorities also revealed they were awaiting the arrival of forensic investigators to remove the bodies and rule out the presence of additional victims.
This comes weeks after a DHL cargo plane crashed near the Vilnius International Airport, Lithuania, on November 25, 2024, killing one person, according to firefighters.
“The plane was due to land at Vilnius airport and crashed a few kilometres away,” Renatas Pozela, the head of the firefighting and emergency services unit, said, adding that one person in the four-member crew died.
The National Crisis Management Centre’s head, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, confirmed that everyone inside the house was evacuated after a house caught fire during the crash, the cause of which is unknown.
