The Oyo State House of Assembly has shown its readiness to curb the activities of land grabbers in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this followed a motion moved by Mr Olalere Safiu (APC-Iddo) on the “Need to Curb Activities of Land Grabbers in Oyo State.”

Olalere said that the importance of land to economic development could not be overemphasized.

According to him, resources used in generating revenue to develop the country are found on land, as well as underneath it, such as gold, crude oil and many others.

He said that miscreants in the state have turned grabbing of land into a lucrative business.

The land grabbers he said, forcefully take the land from the original owners with the use of dangerous weapons like guns, cutlasses and charms and, in the process, render the owners homeless.

“Efforts of judges and lawyers oftentimes do not save the victims because of the delay in passing judgment on cases involving land matter.

“The state assembly needs to come out with a law that will enable the miscreants and others involved in such acts punished,” he said.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Mr Michael Adeyemo, assured that the state House of Assembly would swing into action by making sure that a bill to address the issue came up.

He said that the bill to put an end to the criminal act would be enacted by December.

The house adjourned to November 22.
