Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has hailed the resignation of APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, as a “moral benchmark” and a wake-up call for other leaders battling health challenges.
Ganduje, a former Governor of Kano State, stepped down on Friday citing health concerns and the need to prioritise his well-being.
In a statement posted via his official X handle, Obi commended the move, describing it as a rare show of integrity in Nigerian politics.
“Stepping aside for health reasons is an honourable choice. It shows awareness and respect for the responsibilities of leadership,” Obi wrote.
He emphasised that leadership demands both physical and mental fitness, warning that Nigeria can no longer afford the burden of medical tourism, extended sick leave, or absentee governance due to age-related or health issues.
“By this singular act, Dr Ganduje has set a moral benchmark. I hope others in similar situations will reflect and do the same,” Obi stated.
Chronicle NG reports that the recent Nigerian leaders health issues has sparked renewed debate about the age and fitness of public office holders, with growing calls for a more proactive approach to leadership succession and accountability.
