The Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, has officially prohibited its staff from engaging in cryptocurrency mining and trading during work hours.

This directive was issued through a circular dated September 18, 2024, and signed by the Deputy Director of Administration, Adamu Tela.

A copy of the circular, which went viral, was seen by Chronicle NG on Friday.

It stated the need for employees to focus on their duties and pointed out growing concerns over the distraction caused by cryptocurrency-related activities.

“I am directed to caution all members of staff to desist from mining and all forms of related crypto trading activities while working,” the circular stated in part.

The ban follows a series of complaints from patients and their relatives, who expressed dissatisfaction with how staff members were being distracted by crypto activities during duty hours.

Tela also warned that sanctions would be applied to any staff member caught violating the directive.

“The management will not hesitate to take drastic action in accordance with Public Service Rules against any staff that is caught engaging in such trading while working.

“SERVICOM, ACTU, and security officers have been deployed to ensure compliance,” the statement added.

Staff members were further urged to prioritize their responsibilities and perform their duties with diligence and seriousness.

The move comes amid growing interest in cryptocurrency among Nigerians, with platforms like Not Coin and Dawg gaining popularity for mining opportunities.

However, this enthusiasm has led to concerns about its impact on workplace productivity.
