Nigerians have taken to social media to celebrate the 13th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Chronicle NG reports.

On 5 May 2010, President Yar’Adua died at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Nigeria after battling pericarditis for which he was treated at a clinic in Saudi Arabia.

Yar’Adua was the 13th president of Nigeria. He was governor of Katsina State in northern Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 28 May 2007 before he was elected President.

He was declared the winner of the controversial Nigerian presidential election held on 21 April 2007, and was sworn in on 29 May 2007. He was a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Chronicle NG reports that in 2009, Yar’Adua left for Saudi Arabia to receive treatment for pericarditis. He returned to Nigeria on 24 February 2010, where he died on 5 May.

Remembering him for his service to Nigeria, thousands have taken to social media to celebrate him on the 10th year of his passing.

Yar’Adua has been described as the most loved and peaceful Nigerian President.

Taking to Twitter, AbdulRasheethe wrote, “Today, I remember the selfless statesman, former President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, who passed on 10 years ago. His legacy of integrity as a great leader will always remain indelible in our hearts. May the mercy of Almighty Allah (SWT) continue to be upon him. Amin.”

Another user, Danchanji also paid tribute to the late President. “I’m deeply saddened by the death of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua. Today 5/5/2020 marks 10 years without one of the Nigeria’s Hero, may your soul continue to rest in peace Sir,” he tweeted.

King Dano outlined some his achievements as President as he paid him tribute. “On this day in 2010, president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died. He had his flaws, but he brought peace to Niger Delta, respected the rule of law and was the only president with enough integrity to ever make public a complete declaration of his assets. May your gentle soul continue to rest,” he tweeted even though President Muhammadu Buhari also declared his assets.

Dr Penking also paid a tribute to the former President. “On 5th May, 2010, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua passed away due to cardiovascular disease. He championed Vision 2020 and the Five Point Agenda. Maybe if you were still alive, Nigeria would have been better. Now we can never know RIP Sir. May Allah continue to grant you repose among the saints.”
