Amnesty has been offered to militant Islamists in Mozambique.

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi offered amnesty to citizens who joined the Islamist insurgency in the gas-rich northern province of Cabo Delgado.

Sources disclosed that President Nyusi who made a pledge on Wednesday as the country paid tribute to its national heroes promised that there will be no retaliation against those who surrender and return to their families.

Renamo, another local militant organisation allied to the opposition party, also benefited from the amnesty offer.

Going memory lane, about 570,000 people have been forced to flee their homes after hundreds were killed by the jihadists in Cabo Delgado, who launched their insurgency in 2017.

So far, there have also been a number a string of attacks in Mozambique by the Islamic State group.

In reaction to the development, the President said the militants should take advantage of the ongoing process of disarmament.
