On Thursday, a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 30-year-old Barau Aminu, to six months in prison for stealing five bags of rice and N200,000 in cash.
Aminu, who lives in Kawo, Kaduna, was punished by Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel after pleading guilty to theft.
Magistrate Emmanuel, on the other hand, offered him a N20,000 fine as an alternative.
Earlier, Insp Chidi Leo, the prosecutor’s counsel, told the court that the defendant committed the crime on April 12 in Kawo Market.
The convict, according to Leo, took five bags of rice valued N169,000 and N200,000 in cash from Malam Shuaibu Mohammad.
The inmate was arrested by security officers while attempting to flee on a tricycle, he added.
According to him, the crime is punishable under Section 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017.
