In a robust operation aimed at curbing the illegal sale of petroleum products, the Lagos State Taskforce apprehended six individuals on Monday for their involvement in hawking petrol at exorbitant prices.
The suspects were arrested during a sweeping operation that covered key areas of the city, including Fadeyi, Maryland, Charity Bus Stop, and Airport Road.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, stated that the ongoing fuel scarcity should not be an excuse for criminal activities.
“The current fuel scarcity is no excuse for miscreants to exploit Lagosians by purchasing large quantities of petrol in gallons and kegs, only to resell them on the streets at exorbitant prices,” CSP Akerele said.
He emphasized that this unscrupulous practice not only burdens motorists but also poses significant safety risks due to the inflammable nature of petroleum products.
Akerele condemned the actions of the black market operators, describing them as “cruel” and a “severe threat to public safety.”
He warned that improper handling and storage of petrol could lead to catastrophic fire disasters. “We are committed to curbing these illegal activities and ensuring that the safety and well-being of the public are not compromised,” he added.
The Taskforce Chairman also issued a stern warning to individuals or groups collaborating with petrol stations to divert fuel for illegal sales. He urged Lagosians to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal storage and sale of petroleum products. “Those involved in such practices will be met with the full force of the law,” Akerele cautioned.
The six suspects, identified as Toibu Ishola, 44; Yakubu Olayiwola, 34; Adebayo Rasak, 29; Maria Balogun, 50; Motunrayo Dosunmu, 43; and John Ogunfowokan, were caught red-handed hawking petrol to motorists. They will be charged to court, and the seized petroleum products will be forfeited to the state government.
The Lagos State Taskforce assured residents and visitors that it would continue its efforts to ensure the safety, serenity, and habitability of the metropolis are not undermined. The agency reiterated its commitment to clamping down on activities that could harm the environment and threaten the well-being of Lagosians.
Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, Director of Press & Public Affairs for the Lagos State Taskforce, confirmed that the suspects would face legal consequences and encouraged the public to remain vigilant in reporting any illegal activities involving petroleum products.
