The Lagos State Government has issued an alert over an impending structure collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja.
This comes as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency prepares to commence an emergency evacuation and demolition of the old Block 3 portion of the barracks.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that its reaction team evaluated several elements of the structure and discovered them to be in a precarious condition.
The LASEMA director announced that the building and surrounding structures would be evacuated quickly to avoid any loss of life or damage.
“The agency dispatched a response team to the location, and the findings indicate that the building and those adjacent must be evacuated with immediate effect. We are conducting a response plan that comprises an assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition.
“Under the watchful eye of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration, we will be carrying out this preemptive demolition action due to the precarious conditions of the building and possible secondary incidents that could occur if left unmanaged,” the statement partly read.
Oke-Osanyintolu, on the other hand, encouraged residents in the area to remain calm and avoid spreading disinformation on social media.
He also assured the people that the issue was carefully watched and managed.
