The Kebbi State Government has urged the Federal Government to act quickly in response to the state’s disastrous floods.
Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed-BK, the State Commissioner for Information, made the plea in Birnin Kebbi during a news conference on Friday about the enormity of the flood that wrecked havoc on people and property across the state.
He explained that the flood, which killed many people, drowned 858,311 farmlands and left 329,092 homes homeless.
The commissioner said: “It is worthy to note that a total of 329,092 households were displaced by floods in the state, and 858,311 farmlands were submerged, while a number of people lost their lives.
“In Birnin Kebbi local government, two people lost their lives: Ngaski LGA, seven people; Maiyama LGA, eight; Kalgo LGA, five; while Jega LGA lost seven people to this year’s devastating floods.
“Considering the high impact of the floods in Kebbi State, we cannot do it alone, hence the decision to request the Federal Government to urgently extend helping hands to bring succour to the affected victims.”
According to the commissioner, the state has already produced its report and sent it to Abuja for consideration and action.
He did, however, congratulate the federal government on its promise to aid states devastated by flooding across the country.
