Philip Agbese, a member of the house of representatives, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, urging Nigerians to exercise patience for the reforms to yield results.

Agbese was reacting to comments by Attahiru Bafarawa, former governor of Sokoto state, who criticised the administration’s handling of the economy.

Bafarawa, in an open letter, asked Tinubu to deliver on his campaign promise to tackle insecurity and improve the economy.

“The blight of insecurity which you promised to curtail is getting out of hand,” Bafarawa wrote.

“The economic outlook is frightening. Inflation is galloping out of control. Hunger is ravaging the land. There are cries of anguish all over the country.”

The former governor also accused Tinubu of stifling opposition parties and tilting Nigeria towards authoritarianism.

But in a statement on Friday, Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo federal constituency, said it is “unrealistic” to expect Tinubu to resolve a security situation that has persisted for over a decade.

Agbese, who doubles as the deputy spokesperson of the house, acknowledged the current economic challenges, but stressed that major policy shifts take time to yield positive results.

“The ongoing reforms are designed to reposition Nigeria’s economy on a path of sustainable development. While the effects may be tough in the short term, they are necessary steps towards lasting progress,” he said.

Agbese said that Nigeria’s economic difficulties are largely a result of previous mismanagement, necessitating “bold policy actions” from Tinubu’s administration.

He said that the president’s approach, though demanding sacrifices, is in the country’s best interest.

The lawmaker urged opposition figures like Bafarawa to engage constructively rather than criticise for “political gain”.

“Nation-building requires patience, commitment, and a collective effort. Rather than discouraging Nigerians, leaders should offer solutions and support policies that will secure a better future for all,” he added.

Agbese assured Nigerians that the government remains committed to addressing their concerns and ensuring that the benefits of its reforms become evident in due time.
