No fewer than nine people were killed in a fire at a hospital in southern Taiwan, according to local media.
The fire broke out at the Pingtung County Hospital about 09:40 local time (01:00 GMT), just as Typhoon Krathon made landfall to the west in adjacent Kaohsiung.
According to one source, the wet and windy conditions made firefighting more difficult.
The cause of the fire, which was extinguished more than three hours later, officials said, is still being investigated.
Some reports have it that it was caused by an electrical problem.
Photos showed dense grey smoke pouring from one of the hospital buildings as the fire raged.
About 300 patients were evacuated, and some sought cover at a nearby commercial facility.
Soldiers from a nearby military base assisted firemen in extinguishing the incident.
